The number of divorces in Oman increased to 4,208 cases in 2025, which represents a 2.1-per cent rise from the 4,122 cases recorded in 2024. The figures show that Muscat Governorate recorded the highest share of divorce cases, accounting for 28.9 per cent of the total divorces during the year. Dhofar followed with 17 per cent, while the remaining cases were distributed across other governorates.
Social specialists noted that the increase, although modest, reflects a combination of social and economic factors that continue to influence family life. Financial pressures, communication challenges between spouses and changing social dynamics are among the factors often associated with marital disputes and family breakdowns.
Dr Abdulla bin Said, a specialist in family sociology, said that the 2.1-per cent increase should be viewed within a broader social context rather than as an alarming trend.
“The figures call for a closer examination of the social indicators surrounding family life. Economic transformations and modern lifestyles have altered the nature of family relationships, making family awareness and premarital preparation programmes increasingly important,” he said.
He added that investment in family counselling services and educational initiatives can play a significant role in promoting marital stability and helping couples navigate challenges more effectively.
Family counsellor Maryam bint Abdullah al Rashdi said many marital disputes could be resolved before reaching the stage of separation if couples sought professional guidance at an early stage.
“Constructive dialogue, mutual understanding and shared responsibility remain key pillars of a successful marriage. Early intervention and access to counselling services can help couples address challenges before they escalate,” she said.
She emphasised the importance of expanding awareness programmes targeting young people preparing for marriage, noting that such initiatives contribute to a better understanding of marital responsibilities and family values.
